When I’m in the gym I’m totally in my own zone and rarely look at people. I purposely try to look either at the floor or myself in the mirror. I’m a nice person don’t get me wrong but when I’m at the gym I’m not there to talk…I’m all business. When I’m working out I really need to focus these days because I don’t have much time in the gym…M-F I’m only able to get in for an hour a day so I’ve gotta make it count. Anyways I’m doing my upper body routine and minding my own business as usual and “that guy” approached me. You know the guy I’m talking about….the “gym know-it-all” who walks around giving unsolicited advice to people about their form. Well I’ve seen this same guy doing it to other people before and today was my day to get targeted I guess. Mind you this guy is about 6’3″ and extremely skinny so this is not advice from Arnold or The Rock.
So I’m sitting down on the bench getting ready to do some bench dips near the end quarter of my workout…had AC/DC’s Thunderstruck baring in my earbuds…testosterone flowing to the max and suddenly I feel a tap tap tap on my shoulder. I look behind me and it’s “that guy”. I say hello…he says, “is there a reason you do so many reps on your first set so quickly…you aren’t going to get any gains that way.” I then sarcastically replied “because I’m in a hurry.” He then proceeded to lecture me on proper form and technique wasting a good 5+ minutes of my valuable workout time. I told him I know that my method of working out may be unorthodox but it works for me and I am happy. He said he just wants to prevent me from back injury which was nice and all but really I am a big boy and I know when I’m pushing myself too far…I go by the way my body feels and I’ve been doing this for a long time. Not sure why he was watching me anyways…I thought people go to the gym to workout…I guess I was wrong.
It’s nice to get constructive criticism every now and then don’t get me wrong but when it is unsolicited from a stranger it is just plain awkward in my opinion unless it’s coming from Arnold.
Anyways I’m gonna be paying closer attention to my form from now on since I’ve been doing it all wrong and everything I’ve done in the gym these past years has been a big waste of time! CTRL-ALT-DELETE 😉
